This historic building was first the home of the Ithaca City High School, then Dewitt Junior High School. Built in 1914, it was used by the school district until the 70s when it was purchased by William Downing and transformed into the mixed-use building you see today. With the urban renewal trend of the time, he saw the destruction of many of our old buildings and did not wish for The Dewitt Mall to become only a memory. Keeping the architectural features he loved around the building, he renovated the space into commercial, office, and residential units. One of the best examples is in the Dewitt Mall Office Complex on the first floor, a space transformed from a large theater/auditorium into a two-story office space, broken into several individual offices, but keeping much of the original architecture, including the proscenium, balcony, original overhead lights, and Art Nouveau murals. The ground floor features restaurants, shops, boutiques, a bookstore and a natural foods grocery co-op, several of which have been in the building since the mall was created! We hope that you enjoy your time in our building and we look forward to your return to The DEWITT MALL !
